Two people have died after being pulled from from a fire at a TCHC building in Malvern on Friday afternoon.
Toronto Paramedics say a total of 12 people were taken to hospital following the blaze, four of them without vital signs, two in a serious condition while six were treated for minor smoke inhalation.
It has since been confirmed that two people have succumbed to their injuries, the age and gender of the deceased or those in hospital has not yet been released.
Toronto Fire were called to the apartment building on Neilson Road, north of Sewells Road, shortly after 3 p.m. with firefighters saying that upon investigation, they encountered fire and heavy smoke on the building’s fifth floor.
The fire was quickly upgraded to a two alarm blaze.
The building serves as a seniors residence and Toronto Fire advised residents to shelter in place as attempts were made to reach them.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate.
