Toronto Granted No-Board Report In Labour Dispute With Outside Workers

More than 4,000 outside workers moved a step closer to a strike action or a possible lockout today with the news that the City of Toronto has been granted a no board report by the Ministry of Labour.

This means that the city and CUPE Local 416 which representing outside workers, including garbage collectors, park staff and snow plough operators have until one minute past midnight on February 19th to reach a deal before the workers will be in a legal strike position.

The city meanwhile, will also be in a legal lockout position as of that time.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, City of Toronto manager Peter Wallace said ”we have contingency plans in place to address key city services in the event of a labour disruption.”

However Wallace added that ”we are still actively bargaining with Local 416 and we are working hard to reach a negotiated settlement. Ultimately, we want an agreement that will allow us to improve city services for residents and businesses. We are willing to conduct meaningful negotiations 24/7 to reach an agreement.”

Negotiations between the city and CUPE Local 416 have been ongoing since October.
