Toronto man shot and killed on Shoreham Ct in North York on Monday July 2018

A man was shot and killed in North York early Monday morning, the second fatal shooting within blocks of each other in less than 24 hours.

Toronto police were called to the area of Shoreham Ct. and Shoreham Dr., just west of Jane St., shortly after midnight for reports of gunshots, police spokesperson Katrina Arrogante said.

When officers arrived, the 45-year-old victim was seen lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police aren’t sure if the victim was targeted, but say there may be a connection to the neighbourhood.

“I can’t say that this victim was targeted for being who he was, but I can say that it appears he may have been targeted for the neighbourhood he was in,” said homicide Det. Jason Shankaran from the scene Monday morning.

He had ties to the neighbourhood, Shankaran said.

“He has family and friends who live here.”

One “unknown assailant” allegedly fired multiple shots at the victim’s back, Shankaran said. The suspect is reported to have fled in a vehicle with a driver. No suspect information has been released.

Police are appealing to witnesses or anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

“We’re all fed up with people getting senselessly gun downed in any neighbourhood. Whether it be here on Shoreham Ct. or downtown Toronto,” Shankaran said.

On Sunday, just a block south of the latest homicide, Karim Hirani was killed in what police believe was a targeted shooting in an apartment building near Jane St. and Driftwood Ave.

Hirani, 25, was the city’s 53rd homicide victim. The suspect is described as a black male in his mid-20s, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Police believe the suspect was unknown to Hirani and was acting alone.
