Toronto West Flea Market manager allegedly shot by 16-year-old

A botched heist. A gutsy 65-year-old. A kid allegedly armed with a gun.

That combination left Rocco Scavetta the city’s latest murder victim following a brazen daytime shooting at the Toronto West Flea Market.

And as life was leaving Scavetta’s mortally wounded body, the boy didn’t flinch.

Instead, the teen “calmly” walked away from the murder scene. Cool as a cucumber.

The 16-year-old accused shooter was arrested a short time later after a bystander followed him home, then dropped a dime.

He cannot be named because of his age under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

And on Sunday morning, cops were investigating a suspicious death after a body was discovered outside of a building on West Lodge Ave. in Parkdale.

Cops say homicide has been called in but are not actively investigating at this time. A name, age, and gender have not yet been released.

The victim of Saturday’s shooting, Scavetta, was a longtime employee of the flea market, located at Weston Rd. and St. Clair Ave. W.

He is listed on linkedin as the market’s manager.

Published reports called the man “a fixture” at the iconic flea market.

Witnesses said Scavetta had tried to foil a jewel heist when the incident turned tragic and gunshots sent frightened customers running for their lives.

Scavetta was dead at the scene with as many as three shots fired. The suspected murder weapon was recovered by detectives.

Scavetta, of Toronto, became the 74th homicide of 2018 as the city continues to grapple with an escalating murder rate poised to eclipse 100 victims.

There were no other injuries in the incident.

“Given the day and time of day, we are requesting further witnesses and canvassing for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have,” Det. Michelle Campbell told reporters.

Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit at 416-808-7400.
