Expect Toronto police body cameras by fall

Toronto’s mayor promised Friday to fast-track plans to equip city police officers with body-worn cameras.

Speaking at the city’s thrice-weekly COVID-19 press briefing, Mayor John Tory said he spoke on the issue to both Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and Toronto Police Services Board Chair Jim Hart.

“Body-worn cameras should be given final approval at the July police board meeting, with a goal of having them placed on our police officers this fall,” Tory said.

The issue of body-worn cameras came to the forefront after 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet fell to her death from a 24th-floor balcony last week.

While family members initially alleged she was thrown from the balcony by police, family lawyer Knia Singh later retracted those allegations.
