Two young men dead, alleged impaired driver faces 9 charges, incident on Progress Ave

Two 19-year-old men are dead after three Centennial College international students were hit by an out-of-control alleged drunk driver in the city’s east end on Sunday evening.

Toronto Police say the collision happened on Progress Ave. at Markham Rd. around 6:35 p.m. A Mazda was eastbound on Progress “at a high rate of speed” when the driver lost control in the intersection. The car mounted the sidewalk, hit a guardrail and then struck three young men walking on the south sidewalk.

Two of the male victims were taken to hospital but did not survive. The third, reportedly the 20-year-old brother of one of the dead young men, was also taken to hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Michael Johnson, 40, of Pickering, was arrested at the scene and faces nine charges including impaired driving causing death. He was to appear in Eglinton Ave. E. court on Monday.

Centennial College said the three victims were international students who were staying at the Progress Campus residence over the holiday break.

“We are presently reaching out to their families and will not be releasing their names until family members have been notified,” the school said, adding the college is arranging for on-site grief counselling for other students also living at campus over the break.

“We ask that you keep the families and friends impacted by this tragedy in your thoughts. Let’s continue to move forward with compassion and support for each other.”

Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them at 416-808-1900.

Meanwhile, another pedestrian was struck and injured Sunday around 2 p.m. at Finch Ave. W. and Jayzel Dr., west of Weston Rd.

The man was in serious but non-life-threatening condition. The driver remained at the scene. There was no word on charges.
