And while police admitted it wasn’t the first time they were called to the home where the victim lived with her husband, further details weren’t provided.
Det. Andrew Cechetto confirmed the couple’s son had called the authorities, “but what it was for I’m not at liberty to say.”
Cechetto said an elderly male suspect was in custody and charged with aggravated assault after an elderly female victim was found “suffering from multiple stab wounds all over her body” around 9:30 a.m on the front porch of the home on Elinor Ave., near Warden and Lawrence.
Neighbour Rosina Macchioni called 911 after she heard screams coming from the house while she was outside checking her Christmas ornaments at around 8:45 a.m.
“I look up and I notice the older lady stumbling out of her house and her husband holding onto her and stabbing her,” said Macchioni.
“I run back up into my house to get my home phone, call 911, and I proceed to run across the street to let the operator know what’s going on. One construction worker jumps out of his truck and actually physically throws the gentleman to the floor and kicks the knife to the side of the fence. And then another construction worker runs up to the porch just checking to see what’s going on with the lady. And the 911 operator asks me what injuries (does she have). So I ask the construction worker and he’s like, ‘Oh, she has a stab to her abdomen and a couple to her neck and head on her right side.’’’
Cechetto said the woman was rushed to hospital where she is recovering.
A sign for Blue Star Construction was on a fence surrounding a new home under construction next store to the house where the stabbing took place, but none of the remaining workers wanted to speak.
“There are some citizens that were on the construction site next door that intervened and we’re very thankful for that,” said Cechetto.
Macchioni described the elderly couple as speaking only Arabic, although their son did speak English.
“If she hadn’t made her way outside who knows what might have happened,” said Macchioni.
“(A week ago) I know the police were on the scene because the father was accusing the mother of having an affair with a 35-year-old man. I believe they’re in their ‘80s and they live in that house with their son.”
Yazen Hamad, a 17-year-old student in the area, was on his bike observing the police investigation and said of the stabbing: “From what I know it’s not unusual. It’s like another day in Scarborough for me.”
Cechetto disagreed: “Scarborough is a big place and for this neighborhood, in my experience, it’s unusual.”
