A former North York hydro building on prime Toronto real estate is the city’s newest refugee shelter — it’s absolutely huge and it’s costing taxpayers at least $1-million per month!
And that’s before we take into account the $45,000 per month it takes to heat and light the colossal 80,000-square-foot building.
(In fact, the total cost to
Toronto taxpayers when it comes to housing refugee claimants in 2019 is
expected to be an estimated $75 million!)
Just put it on the tab: A former North York Hydro building occupying prime Toronto real estate is now Hogtown’s newest refugee claimant centre.
Before the Trudeau Liberals came to power, refugee-claimants occupied 11% of Toronto’s emergency shelter spaces; now refugee-claimants occupy 34% of these spaces.
As for the cost to Toronto taxpayers? $75 million per year.
We spoke with Henry, a refugee-claimant from Uganda, to hear more about the living conditions inside the building.
