'RIDICULOUS, VIOLENT ACT': Jeremy Vincent Urbina, 22 chosen at random by killers hunting target

The shooter in Toronto’s 67th homicide was an “opportunistic” murderer out hunting for a kill.

“This is one of the most callous killings I have ever seen,” said Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne, who has been with the homicide division for 16 years.

“I’ve probably seen everything people can do to each other, but I’ve never seen a human being look to hunt another.”

On Dec. 11 at about 8 p.m., 22-year-old Ontario College of Art and Design University student Jeremy Vincent Urbina was taking out the garbage at his family’s housing complex in the Finch and Leslie Sts. area.

Urbina, who had no prior history with police, was shot in the “double digits” and died at the scene.

Two suspects captured on video surveillance had been prowling the area for some time, Browne said.

He said there was a lack of interaction between Urbina and the shooter, who could have been looking for “anyone.”

“To have someone walk around for that length of time isn’t something that we see happen. This wan’t a quick drive-by,” Browne said.

“It’s my belief that the shooter did not know Mr. Urbina and (the victim) would not have seen these (masked) people coming from behind … he didn’t see it coming … two minutes earlier or two minutes later he might not have been a victim.

“The reason why (the suspect) did this doesn’t matter,” the cop added. “The fact that he did this is the most alarming … It’s the most callous killing I’ve seen and the fact that he is still out there is very, very concerning.”

Two suspects — one wearing a pink mask — were seen fleeing the scene. Surveillance shows a partial of one of their faces.

Browne says even though the pair went to great lengths to hid their identity, he would be “shocked and surprised” if someone doesn’t know them.

As for the second suspect who didn’t pull the trigger, Browne says he considers him to be a party to the shooting.

“The non-shooter has an opportunity to contact us and say he didn’t know what was happening and get a lawyer,” he said.

“This was a ridiculous, violent act.”
