A young girl was killed after being struck by a dump truck across from a school in north-west Toronto on the first day of the new school year.
The collision happened across from Elia Middle School at Sentinel Road and Lamberton Boulevard shortly before 8 a.m., Toronto police spokesman, Const. Victor Kwong, said.
“The person calling it in said a dump truck struck a pedestrian and that a female was on the ground and not moving,” Kwong said.
Toronto EMS said that the girl, about 15-years-old, was without vital signs when paramedics arrived on scene and they were unable to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead on scene.
Traffic Services said on Twitter that the girl was 14-years-old.
Toronto Fire has asked for north and southbound traffic to be shut down on Sentinel Road and Lamberton Boulevard to also be closed.
The intersection is southwest of Keele Street and Finch Avenue West.
The dump truck remains on scene.
The children arriving for school were being moved to the east side of Sentinel Road so that they did not have to witness the upsetting scene, police said.
The girl’s backpack was still visible in the middle of the intersection at about 9:30 a.m.
The collision occurred on the same day that Toronto Police launched their annual back to school road safety campaign. The two-week initiative focused on drivers who “carelessly put children at risk,” particularly in school zones.
