Toronto homicide detectives are investigating a deadly machete attack Wednesday evening in the city’s east end.

Just after 6 p.m., police received numerous calls about a man running around with a machete in the area of Morrish Rd. and Ellesmere Rd.

Described as a black male in his 30s, witnesses say the suspect struck a woman with the weapon, knocking her to the ground.

“He continued his attack, ” said Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson, describing the victim’s injuries as ‘horrific.’

“And then he gets into his car and flees.”

The victim, a woman in her 30s, was walking home when she was attacked, said Insp. Stacey Davis.

Speaking to media at the scene, Davis said the the suspect fled before police arrived but turned himself in at 42 Division at Milner Ave. and Markham Rd.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.

Davis say the victim and suspect were known to each other, and say there’s no further danger to the public.
