Toronto rings in new year with fights, stabbings, shooting

It was a violent start to the New Year in Toronto with at least a half dozen serious assaults.

Toronto Police say one man is in critical condition after a fight in the Queen and Bathurst Sts. area around 12:35 a.m.

“A man was kicked to the ground and was bleeding badly when he was taken to hospital,” Const. David Hopkinson said Tuesday. “We now know his injuries have worsened and he is in critical condition.”

The suspects are believed to have fled in a blue car.

Around 5:10 a.m., a man was shot in the head outside an after-hours club in Oakwood Village, near Oakwood Ave. and Vaughan Rd.

“We had a report of a shooting and when police arrived, there was a man who was shot and unconscious. He was taken to hospital and treated and is now in stable condition,” Hopkinson said.

There was no suspect information.

A few hours earlier, a woman was arrested after two men were stabbed in Danforth Village near Main St. around 2:30 a.m.

“Two men were stabbed outside a nightclub and have non-life-threatening injuries. A woman was arrested at the scene,” Hopkinson said.

Another fight in relation to a club, this time in Liberty Village, sent two men to hospital in non-life-threatening condition.

“There was a fight in a parking lot,” Hopkinson said.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian is in serious condition after a hit-and-run at about 4:30 a.m. near Dufferin St. and St. Clair Ave.

The victim was unconscious when taken to hospital. The vehicle that left the scene may be a Honda Civic.

“It’s been a busy morning here,” Hopkinson said.
