Emergency officials say crews are working at the scene of a collapsed crane in downtown Toronto to try to prevent it from falling again.
Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said fire crews and paramedics were at the scene of the collapse shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday at Simcoe and Wellington Sts.
Toronto Police say the crane operator was able to climb down to safety and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Pegg said the buildings at 40 University, 145 Wellington Street West, 144 and 146 Front Street West were evacuated.
Some of the surrounding roads have been closed and they’re urging people to find alternate routes.
Pegg said crews have to keep an eye on the weather as they work to secure the crane from collapsing again.
“We have to be very vigilant about things like heavy rain, wind and the potential of lightning.
“We can’t necessarily prevent a further movement or failure of the crane at this point, but we’re taking every precaution that we can to make sure that it’s secured.”
